Winners pastor kidnapped during prayers in Calabar

the church premises
THE Senior Resident Pastor of Winners Chapel, along IBB Way in Calabar, Cross River State, Mr. Seyi Adekunle, was on Saturday, abducted by yet-to-be identified kidnappers, who stormed the church premises around 8pm.
The development created confusion among members of the church, who had gathered at the church to pray for the success of the Sunday service.
The confusion, according to an eyewitness, stemmed from the fact that the church is located next to the headquarters of the Airport Division of the Nigeria Police in Calabar, but it took officers and men of the division 30 minutes to arrive at the church after they were contacted for an emergency.
The eyewitness, who craved anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the crime, told Southern City News on Sunday that three armed kidnappers entered the church building unnoticed during the prayer session while a fourth person, who was masked, identified the pastor in the midst of the praying group.

She said Ademola was immediately cornered by the abductors and taken away after he was identified, adding that it was likely that the masked person that identified the pastor was familiar with the church.
The source also said that the kidnappers had their waiting vehicle parked just by the entrance to the church along the ever-busy IBB Way, directly opposite the Margaret Ekpo International Airport.
They (suspected kidnappers) reportedly operated for more than five minutes before zooming off towards the Goodluck Jonathan Bypass.

One Year On: No sign of ISIS advance slowing down

It’s been exactly a year since the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria began its rampage through northern Iraq, seizing Mosul and Tikrit in short order as Iraqi security forces fled south. The group has proved its resilience since, despite thousands of coalition airstrikes and multiple battlefronts across a huge area.
ISIS’ most recent successes have come hundreds of miles apart.
Its capture of Ramadi in Iraq and Palmyra in Syria can be explained by its tactics and structure, the weakness or exhaustion of opponents and the support or acquiescence among enough Sunnis in both countries. It may also have benefited, according to some analysts, from cynical power plays in Baghdad.
Even so, taking Ramadi and holding it are two different things. Evidence from previous battles suggests that ISIS doesn’t do defense as well as offense, and it is still vastly outnumbered by Iraqi forces. But the longer ISIS fighters are entrenched anywhere, the more difficult they are to expel, and the Iraqi Security Forces clearly aren’t capable of the task alone.
In Syria, the seizure of Palmyra gives ISIS access to the main roads to Homs and Damascus and nearby gas fields. It also confirms a shift by ISIS to focus on territory held by the regime of Bashar al-Assad in western and central Syria after a series of defeats at the hands of Kurdish forces supported by coalition airpower in the north.

3 Teenage MS-13 Gang Members Charged With 'Brutally' Raping 16-Year-Old Girl In New York

The three are accused of approaching the girl and a male friend at a Brentwood middle school at about 6 p.m. They allegedly robbed and beat the friend, who then fled the scene. The trio then allegedly told the girl they had a weapon and forced her to walk about a half-mile to a secluded area of the Brentwood Country Club golf course. It was there, prosecutors said, that Cornejo and Escobar raped the girl while Larios acted as a lookout.
She was later found walking out of the woods nearly naked by golfers, who called police.

Floods: President Mahama Declares 3 Days Of Mourning

Kenya Charges Five Men Over Garissa Attack

Five men were charged on Thursday in connection with an attack by Somali Islamist gunmen on Garissa University in northeast Kenya that killed 148 students, the worst militant attack in the east African nation in almost two decades.
The assault on Garissa University on April 2, in which gunmen from Somalia’s al Shabaab group stormed in and sought to kill Christian students, has piled pressure on President Uhuru Kenyatta to do more to secure the border and other regions.
The effects of the assault are still being felt in Garissa County, where almost two-thirds of schools have had to shut because students, many from other regions, are not willing to go to school there any more, regional officials said.

Accra Floods: Property Worth Millions Damaged At Toyota

Properties worth millions of Ghana Cedis are feared to have been destroyed by the torrential rains that rocked the country on Wednesday.
Joy Business’ Kuuku Abban reports that dozens of vehicles including SUVs, sedans, minivans, etc parked at the garages of Toyota Ghana Company, Rana Motors, among many other auto shops operating along the Graphic Road in Accra have been damaged.
According to him, business activities grinded to a halt on Thursday as managers and workers of these companies count their losses.
Kuuku reports that a blanket of dirty oil has formed a layer over dirty stagnant flood waters around the buildings.
Flood water at the frontage of the companies had reportedly receded but left in its wake a lot of filth yet to be cleared.
A cesspit emptier truck was being used in an obvious attempt to suck out the water.
Managers of these companies declined comment but indicated a meeting is being scheduled on Thursday to assess the damage.

Fifa Crisis: ‘Ex-President Mbeki Signed Off On South Africa’s $10m’

South Africa’s sports minister says the decision to donate $10m (£6.5m) to Fifa to develop Caribbean football was made by former President Thabo Mbeki.
The payment, which South Africa denies was a bribe to secure the 2010 World Cup, is central to the Fifa scandal.
The claim comes after a letter emerged that appears to show officials seeking an indirect route for the transfer.
South Africa’s government said the letter did not contradict its statement that this was a legitimate payment.
It says the cash was to fund the development of football for the African diaspora in the Caribbean and that the reporting of the letter in South Africa’s Mail & Guardian was “regurgitation and sensation”.
The letter was written by then South Africa FA head Danny Jordaan three weeks before the first amount was paid in 2007.

Robert Mugabe’s Stepson Fined For Manslaughter In Zimbabwe

The eldest son of Zimbabwe’s first lady Grace Mugabe has been convicted of manslaughter and fined $800 (£520).
Russell Goreraza knocked down and killed an unidentified man in his car in the capital, Harare, in February.
“I regret and want to apologise for the incident,” President Robert Mugabe’s 31-year-old stepson told the court.
The magistrate said he had considered cancelling the accused’s licence and sending him to jail but opted for a fine because of his remorse.
Douglas Chikwekwe said that the fact that Goreraza was a first-time offender had also affected his decision.
The BBC’s Brian Hungwe in the capital, Harare, says many are shocked by the fact that Goreraza did not get a jail term.
